Lone Tratt
artist . painter . print maker
Born in Denmark, Lone was raised in a family gifted with artistic ability. She started painting lessons at 9, and at the age of 21 she received her Bachelor’s degree from the Interior Design School of Copenhagen. A couple of years later she left her homeland for Canada, where she continued her studies in drawing, painting and printmaking. She also embarked on a teaching career that spanned decades. She taught privately and had a 22 year involvement with the printmaking school at Dundarave Print Workshop and Gallery, 13 of those years spent running the school. Lone’s solo and group shows span from 1977 to the present. Her paintings, etchings and murals are in many public and private collections in Canada, U.S.A., Europe and Saudi Arabia.
She is fortunate to be able to communicate with the world using a visual language that has no boundaries, except the limits of her imagination. A vibrant palette of rich colours characterizes her work. Using an arsenal of techniques that ranges from multilayered glazes of thin filmy colours, to thick textured applications, she crafts her world a stroke at a time. She paints multiple dimensions of nature, sometimes airy and suspended, as if floating in space, other times contained in highly textured forms with imagined palettes and many layers of paint. She loves to twist and bend her forms, be they petals, seeds, rocks or structures reminiscent of cells. Straight lines have no place in her reverential depiction of the elements she loves most: rock, water, and earth. Water particularly winds its way through all the work, whether it actually appears in a particular series or not.
Her varied series explore the circle of life and connections that bind us all. Some series depict the creation of life, while others, like her florals examine its fully realized potential and passion. One series of monotypes is inspired by eroded sandstone cliffs, yet the resulting work speaks to the creation of life, the pooling of water in cavities and the movement of liquid sliding down crevices.
Each work offers a vessel that creates life and provides a safe haven from the complexity around us. Her goal is to convey the overwhelming joy she feels in the presence of so much beauty. Ultimately, she also hopes to inspire a sense of respect and care for this sacred splendour.
